Protecting sex workers in Mpumalanga
For this project we conducted extensive research in the Gert Sibande District in Mpumalanga, which showed that many young women engaged in commercial sex work and transactional sex. This is as a result of very high unemployment levels among women in the area. It is also probably the reason why HIV infection levels in this area are among the highest in the country.

HIV prevention strategy for the Gates Foundation
The HIV prevention field is changing rapidly as treatment becomes widely available and as new prevention technologies reach the market. The BMGF commits significant funding to healthcare and HIV, and needs to decide whether its strategic focus areas are appropriate in this changing landscape.

Facilitating LPG shipments to the Western Cape
Genesis was retained by Avedia Energy, a firm involved in a wide range of LPG handling, trading and bottling activities, to assist in its contested application to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) for a licence to construct and operate an LPG storage facility in Saldanha in the Western Cape.

Critical analysis of Eskom’s multi-year price increases
Eskom’s tariff increases as part of the MYPD (Multi-Year Tariff Determination) process has had a critical and far reaching impact on the South African economy. The Genesis team has played an important role in ensuring that these tariff increases are governed by sound regulatory principles, being deeply involved in critically assessing all the MYPD tariff applications of Eskom since 2009.

Assessment of damages in R1-billion claim
Genesis provided an independent assessment of the appropriate damages quantum following the repudiation of an agreement between two large South African companies in the communications sector. The analysis was performed on behalf of the defendant in a claim that exceeded R1-billion.

Analysis of additional protective measures for SA Sugar Association
The South African Sugar Association (SASA) asked Genesis to assist by examining a concern expressed by the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) that SASA’s application for increased protection against imported sugar would harm consumers.

Access to finance for 12 000 small-scale farmers
Genesis was commissioned by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Development Trust (ZADT) to develop and pilot financial products suitable for direct access by smallholder farmers. Small-scale farming is the backbone of the rural livelihoods in Zimbabwe but the farmers often struggle to access finance for agricultural production, locking them into low input- low output production models
