Betty Maina

Director, Genesis Analytics (East Africa)

Betty Maina is the East Africa director at Genesis Analytics. She is based in Kenya.

Betty served as cabinet secretary in Kenya’s Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and Enterprise Development. She has also held the position of principal secretary in both its Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and State Department of East African Affairs. She represented East Africa for Genesis Analytics before moving to her State Department position in 2015. She rejoined the firm in 2024.

Prior to entering Kenya’s civil service, Betty was the driving force behind the country’s Association of Manufacturers. As chief executive for over a decade, she championed significant growth in the association.

Previously chief executive of the Institute of Economic Affairs in Kenya, Betty has also consulted on a range of issues in that country from local government reform to integrated urban development.

On an international level, she has served as a member of the UN Secretary General Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and contributed to the Danish Prime Minister’s Africa Commission.

Betty has extensive experience in organisational leadership and development, with an ability to prepare and implement strategic business plans and mobilise resources for implementation. Her interests include trade policy, regional integration, private sector development, public-private dialogue, business and society, sustainable development, education, corporate sustainability, government relations, advocacy and good governance.

Betty has a bachelor’s in Land Economics from the University of Nairobi and a master’s in Development Administration and Planning from University College London.

In 2013 she received a presidential honour, the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear, for her services to Kenya.
