Infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness

Infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness

Overview

Our aspiration is to end life-threatening pandemics and epidemics in Africa.

Every year, malaria, HIV and TB kill over 2.4 million people in Africa and globally more than 1.7 billion people require treatment for at least one neglected tropical disease. Outbreaks like bola and Covid-19 pose major threats, killing thousands and weakening health systems.

While significant progress has been made in prevention and treatment of infectious diseases over the past few decades, we can’t stop at ‘almost’ – especially when resources are constrained.

The calls for resilient health systems that are capable of preparing for, detecting, tracking and responding to pandemics – known and unknown. A pipeline of innovations in vaccines, diagnostics and medications have the potential to transform pandemic response and impact.

We have been at the forefront of the response to major epidemics for over two decades. Our reputation is built on a foundation of impactful, evidence-based work. We have helped countries optimise their HIV and TB funding requests to the Global Fund, strengthened regional collaboration through platforms like the South to South HIV Prevention Learning Network, and supported the scale-up of public health innovations related to wastewater surveillance and introduction of new health technologies for HIV prevention.

Optimising disease detection using wastewater surveillance

Genesis Analytics has partnered with the Gates Foundation to explore the value of introducing and/or scaling up Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance (WES) as part of broader disease surveillance strategies.

Technical support boosts TB care strategy in SA

The Gates Foundation has awarded Genesis a grant to provide technical support to the National Department of Health as part of the foundation’s $2.5-million, three-year tuberculosis (TB) delivery strategy for South Africa.

Enhancing HIV prevention in Africa through the South to South Learning Network

Building on five years of success, in the third phase of the SSLN, we are supporting 16 African countries to strengthen their HIV prevention programmes through shared learning and action.

Estimating the extent of mobility among PLHIV and TB in South Africa and its effect on treatment outcomes

Through literature reviews and key informant interviews, Genesis Analytics explored why individuals disengage from HIV and TB treatment, uncovering critical insights on policy gaps, administrative burdens, and stigma-related barriers. You can view the final report here

Driving Public Health Insights: A Transformative Approach to Disease Surveillance

Genesis partnered with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on a landmark household cohort study in South Africa, central to the country’s efforts to monitor vaccine-preventable illnesses and shape national immunisation policy. From 2022 to 2025, Genesis led the SARS-CoV-2 and Multi-pathogen Serosurveillance (SAMS) longitudinal study, bringing deep expertise in data collection, management, and quality assurance to a complex, multi-year research programme.

Understanding pathways to HIV integration and the impact on costs and resource requirements

Global evidence suggests that integrating HIV services is essential for sustaining the HIV response, ending AIDS by 2030, and advancing universal health coverage.
