Looking for ways to improve AGYW programming in East and Southern Africa

Gender inequality is a key driver of the AIDS epidemic. Women and girls account for 48% of new HIV infections worldwide and 59% of new infections in Sub-Saharan Africa, and AIDS remains one of the leading causes of death for women aged 15–49 years globally.

The epidemic’s impact is especially pronounced among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) 15-24yrs.

Genesis has been contracted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and will be working with The Population Council to synthesise and contextualise evidence to guide countries in managing and implementing comprehensive AGYW HIV prevention responses for AGYW.

This initiative will take place in eight African countries: Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The evidence generated through this grant will be disseminated broadly, contextually, and in a format that can be used by key stakeholders for swift action.
