Expert evidence opens way to cable producer merger

Genesis was commissioned to provide expert economic analysis and testimony before the Competition Commission in a case relating to a proposed merger between two of the largest telecommunications cable producers in South Africa, ATC and Aberdare.

In one of only a few successful 'failing firm' defence cases, the team’s careful analysis of the demand and tender dynamics in the fibre-optic and copper cable markets was key.

The Competition Tribunal approved the merger, despite the fact that it would result in a large increase in concentration.
