Expert advice on purchase of Lanseria airport

Genesis was retained by the Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund (PAIDF) to provide economic advice and an expert report relating to the proposed acquisition of Lanseria International Airport by an investment consortium that included the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).

The report focused on assessing the potential competition between OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) and Lanseria as well as the potential competitive impact of the various shareholdings by the PIC, PAIDF and various B-B BEEE shareholders post-merger.

Post-merger, the PIC would have shareholdings in both ORTIA and Lanseria. Genesis’ analysis proved critical to the process of outlining potential competitive gains, as well as to mitigating potential competition concerns related to information sharing within the PIC post-merger.

The acquisition was approved by the competition authorities with conditions aimed at regulating the potential sharing of information between the newly formed ownership consortium governing Lanseria, as well as within the PIC itself.
