Diagnostic of Young Africa Works strategy in Malawi

In line with its Young Africa Works Strategy, which involves adopting country-level programming, Genesis was commissioned by the Mastercard Foundation to conduct a diagnostic of Malawi to help guide its country office strategy.

This involved three phases:

  • Having a better understanding of the policy and economic environment,
  • Conducting a deep dive into the demand-side dynamics of labour and enterprise development, and
  • An analysis of the skills and job linkages in the country.
In executing these tasks Genesis was able to derive the overall country context of Malawi, including the geographic and demographic profile, labour-market dynamics, youth and women economic participation, the state of government policy, regulation, and the political and donor landscape in Malawi.

Through working on the job linkages, we were able to identify the job skills matching challenges and opportunities, the state of matching employment facilitation, and the digital access and infrastructure in the country.
