Benchmarking high price of SA telecommunications

Genesis has undertaken a number of key studies for Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), comparing the prices of South African telecommunications services against international benchmarks.

The first of these was undertaken in 2005 and showed that prices for key communications services were significantly higher in South Africa compared to the benchmarks.

This study was accompanied by a policy paper outlining 12 proposals aimed at reforming communications in South Africa in order to lower costs and improve access.

In an updated study conducted in 2007, similar results were found and new proposals were put forward, including a recommendation that the level of competition for infrastructure should be increased rapidly.
