Banking on sustainability in Uganda
Genesis Analytics partnered with a leading Ugandan bank to enhance the bank’s sustainability strategy.
Our role involved conducting a comprehensive review of the bank’s social, economic and environmental (SEE) impact framework, identifying capability gaps in its environmental and social (E&S) risk management approach, and providing technical assistance to develop, consolidate and document the impact investments and partnership framework.
Our partnership arose from the bank’s recognition of sustainable management as a key strategic value driver. The bank specifically targeted the SEE pillars to create long-term value and manage E&S risks to minimise harm. Since the launch of its sustainability strategy, the bank has become recognised as a leading sustainable bank in Uganda and the African continent.
In 2021, the bank established a sustainability unit to ensure that its sustainability strategy, which encompasses both SEE impacts and ESG priorities, was developed, maintained and effectively implemented throughout the organisation. In 2022, Genesis was brought on board to help put in place an SEE impact framework.
In 2023, on the back of significant progress, the mandate of the sustainability unit was expanded. This created a need for the bank to ensure that the relevant resources and processes required to execute the expanded mandate were in place. It also provided a useful checkpoint for conducting a comprehensive review and update of the existing SEE impact framework, a task that Genesis was contracted to undertake.
