Why the Young World matters
2 July 2024
There are 800 million young people in Africa, of which 200 million are under the age of five.
Africa is at the heart of the Young World, a grouping of countries with young, growing populations that stretches from the south of the continent across North Africa and the Middle East into Southeast Asia.
The Young World matters because these countries with growing populations are the future. A team from Genesis Analytics - founder and chair Stephan Malherbe, East Africa director Betty Maina, Financial Services principal Paul Ngunjiri and Climate Finance manager Belinda Kaimuri - joined Winnie Lubembe to discussing Unlocking Value in the #YoungWorld on the Your World programme in Nairobi this week to discuss the critical five transitions these countries will need to make to thrive in the future.
One of them is the human transition: There are 27 million Kenyans under the age of 20 and we must look after this cohort in terms of health, education, confidence and social environment and security. Equally important is the economic transition as these countries need to find employment and income opportunities for these young people in a very different world of work.
