Women shine in evaluation of Ethiopian business growth project

Genesis Analytics conducted a final evaluation of Digital Opportunity Trust’s (DOT) Entrepreneurship and Business Growth project in Ethiopia. The project conducted business skills training with entrepreneurs, linked MSMEs to business development services and facilitated greater access to finance. The project also strengthened the capacity of youth interns to become community facilitators and of partner organisations to deliver gender responsive services to youth and women.

Genesis teamed up with a trusted Ethiopian partner, Insights Consults, to conduct the evaluation using a collaborative approach that included the support and insights of the DOT team. The evaluation adopted a learning-focused and theory-based approach and used qualitative and quantitative data to assess the project's performance, progress and results. Genesis prioritised participatory approaches to capture the voices of women and youth.

The evaluation found that the project offered unique services that filled critical gaps in Ethiopia’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, mainly digital literacy and ICT training, mindset training, capacity support and tailored support for women. 

The project was also adaptive to the changes in the economic and political context in Ethiopia. Notably, the project mainstreamed women-owned MSMEs by updating its operations and strategy to integrate women’s needs and to make the training environment safe and conducive for women. 

Through its unique offering, the project provided holistic services across the lifecycle of entrepreneurship that addressed entrepreneurs’ personal challenges as well as business and professional skills. As a result, entrepreneurs became more adaptable, self-aware and business-minded. This was especially strong for female entrepreneurs who credited the project with improving their confidence and furthering their careers and businesses.

As a result, Genesis outlined key lessons learned and recommendations that DOT can implement in similar projects in the region in future.
