Tanzanian bank’s roadmap to new horizons

NMB, Tanzania’s largest commercial bank by assets, commissioned Genesis to carry out a feasibility study for regional expansion within the larger East and Southern African region. This expansion initiative was motivated by the need to sustain future growth, despite the bank's outstanding performance within Tanzania.

The project team performed a comprehensive study that involved several key components, including the creation of a shortlist of suitable countries in which NMB could potentially invest, an in-depth examination of these countries, and the development of an entry strategy roadmap to guide the bank through its expansion. The evaluation process incorporated a combination of desktop research and interviews with various stakeholders within the bank to evaluate NMB's readiness for regional expansion.

The project's output included recommendations to guide NMB’s regional expansion strategy on the selection of specific target countries and investment themes. It provided the bank with a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges in each market. These recommendations provided NMB with a solid foundation of knowledge and strategic insights to make informed decisions and pursue growth opportunities beyond Tanzania's borders.
