Objection to a proposed tariff on steel pipes

Genesis was retained to provide expert economic analysis and support to Macsteel in its objection to a proposed import tariff increase for steel pipes by a supplier, Hall Longmore.

By interrogating the trade data in detail, the project team identified that the import pressure on steel pipe producers locally had, in fact, abated since the initial application, largely due to the closure of a Mozambican competitor.

This had also led to import price increases, as other sources did not benefit from free-trade agreements.

This evidence, together with other issues, such as an overly broad application of the proposed import tariffs, supported the conclusion that the proposed tariffs were unnecessary and would likely harm domestic customers.
