Five-year strategy plan for SA biogas firm

Genesis was commissioned by Bio2Watt Energy Holdings, a producer of renewable energy sourced from organic waste, to provide consulting services to guide the firm’s strategy for the next five years.

We facilitated a strategy workshop to build alignment of the firm's strategy among senior members. These discussions informed a business plan that could be used to present the firm’s strategy to potential investors, and guide the team’s actions over the next five years.

In the business plan, the firm's strategy was organised around the following key themes:

  • The firm’s vision and ambition, and the impact it hopes to achieve from its Phase 1 project pipeline.
  • An analysis of market conditions in the renewable energy market, including the firm's value proposition and competitive advantage in this market.
  • The development of the firm’s Environmental, Social and Governance framework.
  • A business model for the firm’s current and future business lines – including how these generate revenue, the costs incurred, and the respective target markets. For future business lines, this also included steps that the business must take to pursue opportunities in these markets.
  • The firm’s governance and organisational structure, and how this should change over the next five years to allow the firm to meet its aspirations.
  • The high-level financials and budget.
  • An analysis of the key challenges and risks facing the business – including competition and price risks, and how best to insulate from these risks.

Upon successful completion of the project, the CEO of Bio2Watt presented the business plan to the firm’s board of directors, where it was well received.
