Shaping the Next Generation: The State of Secondary Education & Teacher Development in Malawi
Genesis Analytics undertook a diagnostic exercise to evaluate the state of secondary education and the teacher workforce in Malawi.
Malawi faces significant challenges in meeting the needs of its youth demographic. The country’s population is rapidly growing and now exceeds 21 million, 17.6 million of whom are aged 10–35.
The burgeoning youth workforce presents opportunities for a demographic dividend in the future. However, to participate fully in tomorrow’s workforce, today’s school aged population need to be educated with functional literacy and numeracy skills for the workplace, which are developed beyond primary education. Meeting the population’s educational needs strains the country’s secondary education infrastructure, teacher resources, and learning materials.
Our research explored teacher recruitment, training, leadership, and motivation. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study provided a granular analysis of gaps, system enablers, and opportunities to enhance the professional journey of teachers—from attracting talent to fostering leadership and boosting motivation.
The diagnostic report was accompanied by a stakeholder mapping exercise which identified opportunities for collaboration with development partners, universities and civil society organizations to address systemic challenges. The recommendations, tailored to Malawi’s unique context, offer insights into improving teacher workforce development and ensuring that young people are prepared for meaningful employment and lifelong opportunities.
