Building an ICT-led economy in Uganda
Contracted by UNICEF to create a roadmap for ICT skill sets, Genesis is playing a pivotal role in a project designed to bolster the ICT sector in Uganda.
The project, Technical Assistance and Training to Uganda on National ICT Development Strategy, aims to boost the country’s economic development and reduce poverty through various support activities.
Genesis’ contribution is to provide a roadmap for ICT skill sets for capacity building and training, aligning with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Programme in the third National Development Plan. The goal is to identify critical ICT skills needed to support the realisation of an ICT-led economy, which is key for the overall growth and development of the country.
Our team has adopted a needs assessment approach to build the capacity of policymakers and deepen their understanding of the skill needs in their respective industries. The study used an employer survey and key informant interviews with stakeholders of the ICT sector in Uganda including ministries, departments and agencies. The goal was to obtain information describing the characteristics, skills and competencies of ICT professionals and non-ICT professionals in the health and education sector.
We will also conduct a gap analysis of Uganda’s ICT sector and map the target ICT skills for both current and future needs. Initiatives will be developed to address these gaps, such as training tailored to specific organisations or managerial levels based on the analysis results. Capacity-building programmes will involve short-, mid- and long-term initiatives to address the gaps identified in the target organisations.
