Piloting an EdTech solution for students in Sierra Leone

Rising Academies, Genesis Analytics and the Tony Blair Institute have teamed up in an initiative that is piloting Khan Academy’s educational platform in secondary schools across Sierra Leone.

The initiative seeks to improve students’ maths skills in particular, as most fall below the expected grade level. Many factors contribute to this including recruiting and retaining teachers in STEM subjects, the quality of teaching and lack of resources.

The goal of the pilot is to determine the effectiveness of this platform for secondary school education in Sierra Leone, and to provide insights into the benefits and considerations of an educational technology (EdTech) solution.

EdTech can connect students to high-quality lessons and provide teachers with professional development opportunities and real-time data on student performance. This has the potential to narrow educational gaps and improve learning outcomes.

Implementing the pilot entails aligning Khan Academy content with the national curriculum and best practices, developing a remedial course for students, training teachers, onboarding students, and offering guidance on monitoring systems. Throughout the project, Genesis will act as a thought partner to Rising Academies.
