Ryan Short | Why we are becoming the Economic Growth & Impact practice

12 November 2025

For years, we have carried the banner of SVI - Shared Value and Impact. Under that name, we have championed a powerful idea: that business success and social progress are not just compatible, but inseparable. We have proven that companies can do well by doing good. It was a revolutionary concept, and it has been our honour to lead that charge. This will always be an underlying principle of our work - that it is possible to combine profit and progress.

But the conversation has shifted and our focus has grown. The question is no longer if business should have a social purpose, but how it can become a driving force for a continent’s destiny.

That is why, in early November, our CEO, Stephan Malherbe, confirmed our strategic path forward: we are evolving from SVI to the Economic Growth & Impact practice.

This is not a change we make lightly. It is a deliberate, strategic move to meet Africa where it is going. ‘Shared Value and Impact’ articulated a powerful method. ‘Economic Growth & Impact’ declares our ultimate ambition.

Why now?

Africa stands at the most consequential crossroads in a generation. We are witnessing the largest youth population in history, a digital transformation rewriting the rules of commerce, and a global urgency for a just energy transition. At this moment, incremental change is not enough. We need an economy that is built for scale, for inclusion and for resilience.

Economic growth is the central destiny of the countries we serve. But not just any growth. It must be the kind of growth that builds flourishing societies and healthy ecosystems, intentionally. It is the bedrock upon which everything else - health, education, security and opportunity - is built.

Our unwavering commitment, amplified

While our name is new, our foundational principles are not. They are now sharper and more resonant than ever:

Africa-first: Our solutions are designed for Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities, not imported from elsewhere.

Purpose & profit: We prove that the most sustainable businesses are those that deliver measurable social and environmental good.

Advisory & execution: We don’t just write reports; we roll up our sleeves and deliver, from strategy to implementation.

Ethics & independence: Our counsel is trusted because it is impartial and rooted in integrity.

This evolution aligns perfectly with the global shift from aid to growth-oriented investment. Africa is not a passive recipient of charity, it’s the world’s next great economic frontier.

A home for the talented and the purpose-driven

At our core, we have always been an incubator for impact-driven talent. We are a place where the most talented people can find purpose alongside like-minded colleagues, doing work that is interesting, meaningful and profitable. This new chapter strengthens that culture, empowering our high-performing team to make an even greater positive impact.

We are the Economic Growth & Impact practice. And our work is just beginning.
