Looking for best practice in HIV prevention for young women

In South Africa, approximately 50,000 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) became newly infected with HIV in 2020. The National Strategic Plan (NSP) for HIV, TB and STIs (2017-2022) prioritises AGYW for the HIV prevention response and almost R5 billion has been invested in this response by development partners.

Despite the emphasis on the epidemic, and large investment in the response, there seems to be a void in collating and summarising all the information.

Genesis was appointed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to work with key country stakeholders to consolidate and synthesise research findings and review the implementation of best practices of AGYW HIV prevention programmes in South Africa. The project took the format of a detailed landscaping exercise, made up of a desktop review supported by key informant interviews and guided by a technical working group.

This landscaping exercise is being used to outline opportunities for funders in piloting, co-ordinating or supporting the scale up and/or utilisation of best practices in HIV prevention programmes for AGYW. This tool and analysis are expected to feed into the drafting of the next NSP as well as the global request for funding, both of which are being initiated.
