Premier asks Genesis to investigate lifestyle diseases in Gauteng
13 December 2017
Genesis Analytics has been appointed by the Office of the Premier in Gauteng to understand the social, economic and financial impacts of lifestyle diseases in the province.
South Africa faces the burden of four main diseases: HIV, AIDS and TB; high maternal and child mortality; rising non-communicable diseases; and violence and injuries. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are caused by tobacco, the harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets, obesity and a lack of physical activity.
These risk factors are even greater because they occur in an ageing HIV-positive population. Gauteng is likely to suffer greatly from the epidemic of NCDs because it is more urbanised and has more working-age and older people than other provinces.
The Health practice at Genesis commissioned to examine the province's special challenges and how to ensure improved quality of living by understanding the social, economic and financial impacts of lifestyle diseases in the province.
