Expert advice on setting doctor's tariffs

Genesis was commissioned to provide expert economic advice and a report for the South African Private Practitioners’ Forum (SAPPF) in support of its response to a request for comments on the proposed guideline tariffs for medical practitioners and dentists made by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

The project team argued that there was a need for flexibility from both a statistical and practical perspective in the process of determining guideline tariffs. There was a particular concern that these tariffs would be determined without any significant input from stakeholders.

Based on the report produced by Genesis, as well as other expert submissions, the HPCSA proposed a formal process for the determination of tariffs, which will include input from all stakeholders. The new process allows for active consultation and revision by representative boards, including members from the SAPPF.
