Project: The regulation of branchless banking: SA, Brazil and Philippines country study (2007).
Client: Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP).
Overview: Genesis Analytics undertook a diagnostic assessment of relevant legislation, the regulatory environment, and its application to branchless banking in each country through intensive interaction with all relevant stakeholders during country visits. The assessment was used to evaluate the degree of openness and certainty provided for the branchless banking models currently operating, and to identify steps that could be taken to improve the policy and regulatory preconditions for branchless banking and other uses of technology to bank the unbanked poor. This project places a strong emphasis on the emerging regulation of mobile phone-enabled financial services.

Project: Tools to assist developing countries implement AML/CFT regulation (2005-6).
Funding: Financial Sector Reform and Strengthening (FIRST) Initiative .
Overview: Genesis Analytics was retained to draft guidelines and strategies to help developing countries implement and comply with Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements in a manner that does not impede financial inclusion. The project, conceptualised by Genesis Analytics, is one of the largest funded by FIRST to date and involved a major international review (covering Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan and South Africa, as well as case studies on the Philippines, the UK and the USA) of the impact of anti-money laundering (AML) and combating of financing terrorism (CFT) legislation on access to financial services, as well as the development of detailed tools for access-friendly AML/CFT implementation in developing countries.
