Competition and regulatory economics
The Business in Development practice (BID) provides economic and strategic advice, across a range of sectors, to clients who share our belief that the private sector is vital to Africa's development.

We work with governments, multi- and bi-lateral development institutions and private corporations to build environments that maximise the sustainable socio-economic impact of private enterprise.

Our team has a reputation for excellence, innovative thinking and long-term client relationships. Our expertise spans economic research, diagnostics and strategic advice, public-private dialogue facilitation, scenario planning and regulatory design. We also assist corporations which wish to extend the developmental impact of their core business, and configure their activities to combine profitability with the highest social impact.

Our approach rests on five fundamental competencies:
  • Understanding Africa:
  • Understanding both sides of the game (business and government):
  • Applying a systemic approach to development challenges that looks beyond symptoms to address root causes.
  • Providing our clients with clear and practicable advice rooted in reality and communicated lucidly.
  • Always ensuring advice is independent and honest.
In addition to numerous consulting assignments for a variety of private and public clients, BID also manages the design and implementation of large development initiatives on behalf of donors. Two such initiatives currently under management include:

The Financial Education Fund (FEF), a multi-donor fund, established with start-up capital of UKP 4million from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID).

The aim of the Education Fund is to facilitate projects that test alternative approaches to building the financial capability of low-income groups and stimulate the use of formal financial services. Grants will be awarded up to UKP 250 000.

The Shared Growth Challenge Fund (SGCF) is funded by the SA Business Trust and is capitalised at R35 million. The Fund is now calling for project applications from private companies able to match funds granted either in cash or in kind.
